I have always been a HUGE advocate of Affirmations. In my experience they keep me mentally challenged and headed in the direction to achieve my goals and dreams.
Whether or not they work depends on my commitment to keeping them at the forefront of my thoughts and attention, but when I do that I typically find that they have impact.
Recently I read a post by Noah St. John about “The Afformations Method“. Noah believes there is a fundamental problem with “affirmations”, and that they don’t work for most people. Why? Because you’re trying to convince yourself of something you don’t really believe, or something that simply is not really true.
That makes sense to me, and it’s something I’ve questioned internally. This may be an over-simplification, but integrity is a core value for me and I sometimes struggle with how to be honest with myself about the present AND still practice affirmations.
Noah St. John approaches this in a unique way – with questions. He believes the human mind is always asking and searching for answers to questions. Instead of repeating affirmation statements that we may not believer, he recommends we ask ourselves empowering questions – questions that force us to challenge our thought patterns from a negative to positive in order to answer the questions. Here’s an example provided by Noah:
Take a statement like “I am rich” – to which the brain replies “Yea, right!” What’s the empowering question you should be asking instead?
That question might look something like this: “Why am I so rich?”
Try it. Ask yourself “Why am I so rich?”
Do you know what your brain is doing right now? Searching for a positive answer to that question!
Do you know what happens to me when I ask that question? My mind immediately begins creating solutions and answers to that question! New ideas and steps to implement into my business start coursing through my mind.
Give this some thought today. Come back tomorrow and we’ll cover the 4 steps Noah outlines to Create Afformations that Change Your Life. You won’t want to miss it!
Here’s to Change! ~Kate
