Are Mobile Websites Really Necessary?

by Kate Saunders on November 21, 2011

Mobile websites are rising in popularity – and for good reason.  Google has already told us that searches taking place from mobile devices is about to overtake the searches initiating from desktops.  That is HUGE, and mobile marketing is here to stay.  If you want to stay in business, you have to capture this market. So yes, mobile websites are very necessary.mobile-marketing-sites

But in your rush to “Go Mobile” please don’t sacrifice your brand, because you don’t have to, and you shouldn’t.

When mobile searchers land on your website – what is it saying about your brand?

There are some fabulous mobile website designs available today.  Don’t settle for anything less, because your mobile website is an extension of  your brand and reflects something about your business to the people landing on it.  What it looks like on the mini-screen matters.

Before you move forward with any web designer, whether it be for a standard desktop website or mobile website make sure you ask the following questions:

  1. On what platform do you develop mobile websites?
    • In my personal opinion, mobile websites should NOT be based in WordPress. It’s too “heavy” and doesn’t meet the design standards set by the MMA, or by W3c.org. You can check them out here:  http://www.w3.org/standards/webdesign/mobilweb  (Personally, I use HTML5 and HTML5 with variations. It’s the latest, most flexible, and most dominant web language on the web. Giving my clients the best available today – is the only way I operate. I want them to have the ultimate competitive advantage.)
  2. How long have you been in business and how many mobile sites have you developed?
    • Please don’t underestimate the importance of this question.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met with new clients only to find that they have literally been “taken” by a person claiming to be a marketing or mobile marketing specialist.  In the end, they realized this person had no experience or knowledge in this field – apart from a $29 course they just purchased.  Ask questions.
  3. Does SEO (search engine optimization) matter with a mobile website?
    • Yes, it matters a lot, and will matter more as time goes by.  If they don’t know how to answer this, that’s your answer.
  4. Ask to see some of the mobile websites they’ve developed.

You can take it from here, and hopefully this article will help you avoid scam artists, well meaning but inexperienced people, and ultimately end up with a mobile website and mobile marketing strategy that both reflects and enhances your brand.

In today’s marketplace, it’s important to maximize every competitive advantage available in order to succeed and thrive. It’s no different with mobile websites and marketing.
