Writing is something I love.   I always have.

 I journaled as a kid, read voraciously, actually enjoyed English, (I know, I probably shouldn’t admit that!) and have always wanted to write a novel.  Blogging is a natural extension of that for me. 

I get into trouble occasionally because I’m interested in a such a wide variety of topics and subjects, that with a few blogs up and running now, I sometimes find it challenging to blog consistently on each site. 

Here are some of the ways I overcome this challenge.

• I subscribe via Google Reader to my favorite blogs within a topic.  Interacting and staying current within any given field I’m interested in helps inspire and keep me up-to-date.
• I read, read, read.
• I’m implementing Jeff Vacek’s Go Be Productive program into my life.  It has single-handedly made the most  difference in my ability to focus and Be Productive!  =)  (Google him – his program is fantastic!)
• I learn, take classes and update my education.   I believe this is critical to keeping both my mind and blog content fresh and relevant.
• Be Curious.  This might be the most important of all.   When I’m curious about a topic, a perspective different from my own, new information, other opinions, it broadens my perspective and understanding.

Here’s a quote from Oliver Wendall Holmes, “Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.”   I love this!

Begin with the End in Mind.

Creating a new blog?  One of the most important things you can do when starting a new blog is research.

Research your “niche”, the topic your blog will be focused on and what the market wants.  Sketching out your blog “architecture” or “frame” before you begin will allow you to create a blog that’s both relevant and beneficial…two keys to successful blogging.

If you create a blog that Inspires | Educates | Motivates you will have a successful blog.

Take the time to get to know your niche.  What are people talking about in this niche?  What questions do people have? (You’ll want to provide the answers.)   What are the top blogs in your niche talking about?

Here’s a quick list of how to gather more information in your niche:

1. Social Media Sites.  Visit the top social media sites and search for your particular niche.  Participate.
2. Ehow and Article sites.  Visit Ehow.com and various article sites.  What are people writing about within your niche?
3. Visit YahooAnswers and Wikihow.com.  What questions are people asking, what information are they seeking?
4. Visit Technorati.com and Google.  Find some of the top blogs in your niche and READ.
5. YouTube.  Check out YouTube.com and search for  your niche.  Listen to the top videos and read the comments.

Make notes along the way.  What are the key words used in your niche?  Consider using the key words and related topics as main categories for your blog/blog posts.  Search engines love content that flows and relates to the topic consistently throughout a blog post.   With that said, don’t use the same word repeatedly, that’s considered too spammy.   Use words that relate to each other, for example, “grill” and “barbeque” relate to each other, yet are not the same word.

The research you do now will help you structure both the architecture and initial content for your new blog.

Most importantly, there is no substitute for interest and passion when it comes to blogging.  If you blog about something you like, love, are interested in and /or passionate about, that will come through in your writing.  It will ring true to your readers, and this single factor alone will make a significant difference in the success level of your blog.

Here are a few tips for setting your website up with the goal of optimizing it to be Search Engine friendly from Day 1.

When doing your keyword research, make note of some of the keyword phrases that are similar to your main keyword, niche, or purpose of your site.

Google and other Search Engines like to see content that is related – yet NOT completely similar to your keyword phrase or main purpose.  If you use your keyword phrase constantly through out your site in post titles, categories, content, etc. you will risk being seen as “spammy”.   That is not a good thing if you want Google and other Search Engines to optimize your site to the front page quickly.

Use words that are naturally similar to your keyword(s) and niche as you write content.  When structuring Categories and Pages for your blog, keep in mind some of the keyword phrases related within your niche, and utilize them through out your site.

This is one simple thing makes your site – and content – much more likely to be considered as valuable to the Search Engines, and should help move you toward that desired First Page of your preferred Search Engine.

Following are the basic steps to getting started with setting up a Word Press blog.

Step 1. Your Domain Name

In my opinion, the importance of your domain name should not be underestimated.

Choose your domain name around a solid keyword phrase that people are likely to search if they want to find a site that offers what your site will offer.

Google and other search engines (at least as of today) often trust “domain matches” and honor them by giving them higher ranking.  Do your best to ALWAYS grab a  “.com” domain, and there should be no “-” in the name, if possible.

I use GoDaddy for all my domain searches and purchases.  They are available 24×7 if you have questions or technical issues.  I’ve only had to call them twice, but each time their customer service has been incredible.   And, you can always find coupon codes by searching Google to save even more money.  Their domains are typically under $10.

Step 2.  Hosting

I use HostGator, and I highly recommend it.

Their customer service, reliability and tutorials on “how to” are exceptional.  They are also very inexpensive at less than $10 per month for unlimited sites|domains|blogs on that one account.

I also love that HostGator is “green” and use wind energy for powering their servers!

Step 3.  Nameserver Information

Check your email.  You’ll have an email there from Hostgator with some information that you’ll need back at the GoDaddy website.  Write down the “nameserver” information provided to you in your Hostgator email.   Now login to GoDaddy and select the domain manager option.

You will now revise your nameserver information to match the two Hostgator gave you in their email.  You’ll see a message that says it can take anywhere from a few to 24+ hours for this to transfer.  In my experience, it will do so within a few hours.

Step 4.   Install WordPress!

You can either wait for the domain to transfer to Hostgator, or you can get to your Hostgator control panel (cpanel) via the link in the email they sent you.  Once you are there, login.  From the control panel, scroll down to Fantastico or Fantastico De Luxe.

You’ll see a list of options on the left side.  Under “Blog” you’ll find Wordpress.  Click it and follow the directions.  Your new WordPress blog will install quickly and automatically.  Very simple.

Step 5.  Select Your WordPress Theme/Skin

For this, you can simply Google Free WordPress themes, or visit my Resources page for additional options.  Find the theme you like and download it to your computer desktop for ease of finding the file.

Now we’re going to upload the theme to your FTP server – or if you use Hostgator, this can be done very easily from your cpanel.  Head back over to your Hostgator Cpanel and go to File Manager.

Go to the folder wp-content and click on it.  Now click on the “themes” folder and then click “Upload” (found as a tab at the top).  Now select the file from your desktop and it will upload to your hosting account.

Now click on the theme itself and in the top right corner you’ll see “extract”.  Click extract.  Now you’re ready to head on over to your WordPress site.

Step 6.  Activate Your New Theme.

Open WordPress and go to your Dashboard.  From here select Presentation. You should see your new theme as one of the options.  Click on it and in the very top right corner of your site you’ll see the option to “Activate Theme”, or something similar to this.  Click on it, and your new theme should be activated!

Step 7.  WordPress Customization

There are many resources out there for learning WordPress.  You can check out the tutorials on Hostgator, or simply Google it.   Most of what you need you can find for free, and there are several inexpensive tutorials available, as well.

Outsourcing design and customization can actually be very Inexpensive.  You’ll find updated information on my resources page.
